Research – Choosing a Music Label Under ‘Universal Music’

The brief states that our artist is signed to Universal Music, however through my independent research I have discovered that the organisation is a conglomerate group, with numerous labels under the Universal Music Group. To make sure my artist is successful they will have to be under a music label which is suitable towards their genre. In order to do this, I have complied ones that will support my artists style to assess their success and develop an overall conclusion.

Capitol Records (part of Capitol Music Group)	Pop	5 Seconds of Summer, Beck, Emeli Sande, Halsey, Katy Perry, Lewis Capaldi, Troye Sivan.	This label houses many significant names alongside new artists, this would be a great platform for my artist to break into the mainstream genre of music.	This artist is primarily for pop artists or mainstream sounding artists.	5/10 Although being successful for new artists and holding many well known artists, this label is not specialised for the dance genre and I will need to continue my research to find a label specialised for the dance genre which is outlined in the brief.
PM:AM Recordings	Dance	Tiesto, Avicii, Jonas Blue, Zedd and Afrojack	This label is better specialised for what I am aiming to sign my artist under, as it centres around dance artists. This is essential to my brief.	It advertises itself as predominately housing DJs, however, despite this it has signed dance artists.	7/10 This has shown itself to be the platform for dance artists under the universal music label, and as it advertises itself for dance artists, making it highly suitable for my artist however as my artist is a singer and not a DJ it may be difficult to establish her within this label.
Astralwerks	Dance	Halsey, Sia, David Guetta, The Chemical Brothers	This label has artist which videos I have previously looked at as they share a similar style of music within the dance genre as my artist does.	It does not have many artists which does not suggest the overall predominant genre of the label.	9/10 This label is the most suitable label for my artists as it has artists similar in style an advertises itself as a pop/dance label.
Republic Records	Pop Dance	Ariana Grande, Drake, The Weeknd, Post Malone, Lil Wane	This label has a diverse genre of artists that all can fall under the bracket of pop and dance. This mainstream element of the label will allow my artist to be promoted amongst these artists.	I cannot find any limitations here.	10/10 This label encompasses everything I set out to achieve in my brief, as this is a mainstream label for my artist to be promoted on. I will choose this label.

Overall, I have decided to use Republic Records for my label as it is the most suitable in the brief and in regards to the branding of my artist, as she is a singer of the dance genre. For this, I will use the Republic Records logo in my artists webpage and on other products which will be suitable for my artist.
