Questionnaire Feedback - Research

Research – Questionnaire Feedback

In order to successfully make sure my questionnaire is used to help me make a successful music video, here I am going to assess the results through analysing and commenting on what was successful and where I could go on to develop to understand the full audience response and preference.

Target Audience
This section was crucial to include as to fill the specification I need to cater for an AB class and 16-25 demographic. I understood that to make something for this demographic I need to get feedback from this demographic on all areas that I am creating and aiming to appeal to. The first sections outlined who was answering the questionnaire while also keeping all of the responses anonymous by not asking for a name or any personal details. I asked for their social class, which was a closed answer question with answers such as ‘middle class’ and ‘lower middle class’. By stating the name of each class I hope that my audience would answer honestly and understand why I am asking it. I also asked for their ages which I also placed in a closed answer question and I did the same for gender. Despite gender not being specified on the specification I wanted to make sure I represented many people within this questionnaire and by including this it can make me more successful in my implementation of the answers into later stages. I also made sure that if it was a closed answer question I include the option not to answer with ‘Don’t Want To Say’ as I felt this gave the choice to not disclose this information if they were not comfortable.

This section was successful as the answers I received did matched the specification outlining demographic. I don’t feel like I could expand upon this any further. The answers are as followed:
Class demographic results: 60% Middle Class (B) . 20% Lower Middle Class (C1) . 20% Upper Middle Class (A)
Age demographic results: 60% Aged 16-20 (Lower) . 40% Aged 21-25 (Higher) . No different ages

Song
To understand the typical expectations for the songs music video and theme I asked the participants to comment on what they would like to see in the video. I gave the participants a change to listen to the song as many times as they liked and then provided them with open questions to answer to find what they wanted to see and the first ideas they had on the song.

I found these answers interested as many answers supported each other as they were the same, however some answers were contradictory however this gives me the opportunity to develop from these points and find what I would like to see while also taking their views into consideration.

The first questioned asked what genre did they think the song was and 100% of the responses answered dance which is successful and also highly useful in supporting me.
I then asked the participants to think of what moods they associated with the song, this gave me a straight response of ‘calm’, ‘chilled’, and ‘relaxed’ which was the respected response as the song is typically slower than the usual dance songs.
The third question asked for what colours they associated with the song as I wanted to gain an idea of what to place on my mood board and the colour schemes I should follow for the branding of the artist in terms of the mise en scene of the music video and the website theme.
As I know from previous research that lip-syncing is crucial to a video so from asking what lyrics stood out for me I knew what to place a focus on. A majority of the responses were lyrics from the chorus which I now know the make more exiting and creative to focus on these lyrics.
I also want to gain an understanding of what other artists are doing within the dance genre so I asked what artists had a similar style. Responses included ‘Halsey’ and ‘Lorde’, these well-established female are useful in understanding how I am going to create the brand and the style for the artist.
The next set of questions looked at the expectation for the music video. I gave one opened question and two closed, both of which focused on my own knowledge and also the work of Andrew Goodwin who is a theorist specialising in media and music videos. From this I now have a clearer idea that the popular response want ‘lip syncing’ and also ‘a love story’ to fill the narrative. These responses were the most successful as some of the answers did not match my expectations, however this is greatly useful for me as I can challenge these responses and also see a greater idea of what other people want and not have a closed mind approach to the video.

Genre
I also wanted to understand more about the genre and what my participants and audience think, so I asked what their personal preferences were when it came to dance music.

This was a section what I didn’t know what to expect from the answers as I am not familiar myself with the genre, however I knew that it would greatly help me to understand where I can do some personal research with other dance artists. This was another section which came out successful as I found that all of my responses were knowledgeable as tall participants had stated that they liked dance music.

I gave a closed yes/no question first asking if they liked dance music because I understood that if they did they would have more knowledge and if they answered no than it would impact on the knowledge of their answers. All responses answered yes which helped me understand that there would be significant knowledge demonstrated in other answers.
By asking how often they listen to dance music also helps me to generate an idea of how much they like the genre and how much of an impact it has on their life. This gave a varied response through the closed answer responses I provided, but the responses outlined that they either listened to music ‘Everyday’ or ‘Alternate Days’.
Then, for my own understanding, I asked what asked the typical listened to so I could also explore what conventions for music videos and webpages fit for these artists. This would help me understand the branding of dance music artists. For this answers ranged from DJ ‘Calvin Harris’ and singer ‘Dua Lipa’.
The final set of questions wanted to know what my demographic also liked and listened to to help me understand what their personal preference were. I asked what genre and other artists they liked and also what other music videos they have watched and what they liked to watch so I could independently view them to see what makes them interesting.

Website
As making the website is a critical part to the creation of the artists brand I have to understand the participant’s preference of what to include on a website. I understand that this may not be as in depth as other areas of the questionnaire as they would not consult an artist’s webpage very often to learn more, so I made sure to ask relevant and appropriate questions for the participants to answer.

The responses help to create my ideas for the websites because the participants identifies that they like and what they didn’t like about the designs of a webpage. I did not know what to honestly expect from the responses but overall I found them useful and helpful in establishing what I want.

I asked participants how often they visit a website of an artist and the responses were unexpected as a majority said that they ‘rarely’ visits an artist’s website.
Following up on the previous question was asking why they visit a website which again gave similar results with ‘Tour Dates’ and ‘Videos’ as the responses for both the open answer questions and closed answer question with choices.
I also asked for information on social media to understand how people engage with their favourite celebrities online and the best way for them to connect to my artist. All participants answered with ‘Instagram’ which was expected as this is the most popular social media that people engage with for the demographic of 16-25 year olds.
I also wanted to understand how the demographic engage with listening to music through either purchasing or streaming the music. I discovered that many listens through ‘Youtube’ with more listening through ‘Spotify’ so I understand what links I will use on the webpage to help with the audience engage with the artist and their products.
The final section asks for detailed feedback on a wide variety of artists webpages. The wide variety is of the different genre ranging from Dua Lipa (dance), Foo Fighters (rock), and Ed Sheeran (pop). I have included the opening pages of the webpages which they will comment on what they like and do not like. Here I provided support with sections, such as comment on the colour, fonts, and use of images. They also could be influenced by the questions I asked to begin with, for example on participant commented on the use of social media logos. This is critical in helping me understand the user needs for the website when I begin to design it and I will strongly refer back to the video.

Name
The final section is composed of 4 questions giving suggestions towards names for my artist. I included the name of well-known artists and asked if they did or did not like the name and then asked for a further comment. I also gave space in the final question to give suggestions for a supposed name. This sections answers will come in useful later on when I create names and ask for feedback and a final vote to judge what I want to use.
