Elements to Include in my Music Video - Planning

Element you need to include
Explanation of what you are going to include
Included
Visual Content and appropriate mise en scene
- It is essential that in my planning of my music video that I aim to incorporate many different shots in my video to fulfil the brief and also to make the video professional and interesting for the audience of the 16-25 AB demographic also outlined.
- Using appropriate mise en scene is essential to establish the branding of my artist alongside displaying the dance genre through this.
- For the use of colour, I am aiming to use bright and bold colours through having gels on the redheads in the filming. This will allow me to have a clear image in the branding of my artist as well as establishing the dance genre further.
- It is essential to strongly consider the composition of shots for my music video ad this will make them interesting and appealing for an audience. I will be doing this in my storyboard and also in the filming of my music video. I will be looking at the rule of thirds and also the centering of shots which may have some aspects of symmetry. This will allow my video to have some appeal to the audience as the focus on the visual aspect is essential in my final product.
- In the shot compositions, deciding elements of shot types, angles and movement which are appropriate to the dance genre will be researched prior to filming to gain a better understanding of what is being asked for the genre of dance.
- I will have visuals relating to the lyrics, for example, in my lyric analysis I have found that I can have a contrasting bold and colourful shot against a dark image on the line ‘watch me like a dark cloud’. The use of the word ‘dark’ will have the dark shot relating to the lyric.

Appropriate editing
- In my editing I will be precise and accurate when making cuts to shots as to make them cut to the beat of the song.
- For the editing, I will also aim to successfully incorporate the narrative aspect alongside the artist’s shots, and this will be beneficial in successfully keeping to the brief. I will need to find a good divide between how much of the artist and the narrative to include to keep the video interesting but to also maintain the branding of the artist.
YES
Narrative
- The brief states that a narrative should be included, and I will be doing this through deciding over if a performance montage or a linear narrative should be used.
- I have found that a narrative can greatly link to my videos lyrics, as they are about a woman singing about LGBTQ relationships and promoting this values in her lyrics. For the narrative I will consider how I can incorporate this into the video and will do so in my planning and seeing which will be the most successful and the most relevant.
- I will also research into different narratives within music videos and conclude which may be the most successful, being a linear or performance narrative, or even a hybrid of both.
YES
At least two locations
- For this outlined in the brief, the location of the narrative and the artists lip-syncing will certainly be different, however for both I can include more than one location. In my planning I will aim to have two different location for the lip-syncing, and alongside this I will also find ways to change the mise en scene of this through the shots composition and the colouring of the lighting. For the narrative, I have a greater range to explore the narrative here as I can have a moving location and not be set in one place. For this it will fulfill the brief to a great extent and be greatly beneficial for the videos interest on the audience.
YES
A clear brand image
- The video will aim to promote LGBTQ values and this will center as the message in the branding that the artist will promote.
- A brand image will be established in both my video and my website, but for the video I will aim to present a clear identity of the artist. I can do this through having a particular look for the artist in her costume. Furthermore, keeping a consistent look for her makeup and styling will assist the physical brand.
YES
Media language that establishes the artist to the ‘dance’ genre
- The pacing of the editing will be crucial for this as a faster pace of editing to the best of the song will establish this.
- The mise en scene will also be crucial in establishing this and I have covered it in the first section.
YES
Evidence of intertextuality
- The movement of the artist and the colouring of the videos for the music videos of Superorganism have inspired me in what video I want to create, and for this I will aim to present a subtle sense of intertextuality through this in referencing their media texts in having a similar presentation of the artist as laid back and moving a same fashion. This won’t be a direct intertextual reference, however, it will aim to be an influence and I can further enforce this in elements not how websites, such as in a social media feed discussing Superorganism as an influencing force.
- The music video for ‘Back to You’ by Selena Gomez opens with bright colourful lights flashing over the artist. I will attempt to create a similar effect in my video, but I will also link this to the message that the video aims to promote, so the colours will flash in relation to the colours of the LGBTQ flag, further influencing the artists branding and the intertextual reference which is highly relevant to the 16-25 AB demographic who will be familiar with this song and the video.
YES
Clear evidence that the target audience in the brief is being addressed
- In all elements, I will aim to relate it back to how it is beneficial to my target demographic. In doing this I will strongly build the branding and video around the aspect of the demographic and if it can be successful to their audience.
